NEW LOVER
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield, Bob
Marlette and Tim Pierce)
New lover
New lover
Baby you need sexual healing
You're damn right
Got bedroom lovers up to the ceiling
Day and night
It's not that it's wrong but it sure ain't right
Yeah
All your lovers walk on water
For one night
In the morning you run for the border
In plain sight
Is that all you want, one more man, one more night
Yeah, this is your new lover
Same as the old lover
Everybody knows it does nothing for your soul
You're just another passion junkie
This is your new lover
What you need and what you want
Are two things
I don't want to be the confidante
Of your sins
I don't want the stories
You know it stings
Yeah, this is your new lover
Same as the old lover
Everybody knows it does nothing for your soul
You're just another passion junkie
This is your new lover
Hear you come walking
With another handsome man
I'm tired of your show baby
Don't you understand
I'll be your new lover
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover
I know I can give you something for your soul
Don't have to be a passion junkie
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover
I know I can give you something for your soul
Don't have to be a passion junkie
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover

Oh, yay! I've been waiting for this song....
it's another contrast. It is the flip side, the other perspective of
"Scandalous Life."
Baby you need sexual healing
You're damn right
Got bedroom lovers up to the ceiling
Day and night
Well, okay, so far it's the same thought as Scandalous Life. The perceived
"fantasy" life (real or imagined) of a sex god (or goddess) or other sexually
obsessed person.
All your lovers walk on water
For one night
Yet another Jesus reference. But hey, I think we've all been here. This is THE
one. I barely know this person (which definitelyhHelps) but he's perfect....head
over heels. Heat of the moment.
In the morning you run for the border
In plain sight
The morning after, the rush is gone, the perfect is gone, and now the one who was perfect
is now no longer worth speaking to. (and when your heart is breaking, I won't be
there to pick it up)
Is that all you want, one more man, one more night
hypersexual. Back to illness. Sexual healing. uh huh.
I still think of this as more the musician = one night stand stereotype.
What you need and what you want
Are two things
The "what you need" and "what you want" from Scandalous Life
again. I think the speaker has different things in mind here, though, than the
speaker in Scandalous Life. Completely opposite opinions. The contrast again.
I don't want to be the confidante
Of your sins
I don't want the stories
You know it stings
Here's a bit of realism. Something to identify with. Yeah, it would sting, to
be the "faithful" one stuck w/ this person. He seems to give the
impression of the "best friend waiting in the wings" here. And yet another
religious reference.
Hear you come walking
With another handsome man
I'm tired of your show baby
Don't you understand
dtts, idwafy....
I'll be your new lover
Not like the old lover
I know I can give you something for your soul
Again, the perspective change from Scandalous Life. Who DOESN'T want to feel like the
special one, the one who will make a difference, the one who will be THE ONE? The one who
has what it takes? compare that to the long line of lovers in Scandalous Life, and
the bedroom lovers stacked to the ceiling.... nope. THE ONE.
Yep, in your dreams, you can be the one. ha! I wonder how many times Rick has
heard THAT in his life. (um, never?) I get the feeling that it isn't going to
turn out like the speaker thinks, regardless of his confidence. Sort
of like the "if I can just say something clever/heartfelt when he walks by I won't be
like the other hundreds of people he talks to today" hotel lobby/backstage
thought.... hmm, that sorta segues into lust..... go figure! |

This song has consistently been my "skipper" on this
disc, and this disc is definitely one of my favorite Rick CDs, so that says
something. I've always felt somehow it didn't fit. Maybe it's because of the
collaboration, maybe Rick didn't have that much input into it, I don't know.
I think most of my dissatisfaction can be summed up in one word: SHA-DOO-WOP!! What the
hell is that word anyway? I remember when this came out we were all speculating
about was it "shadow up" or some weird word that we weren't understanding
correctly. But then word came down: no, it was some 1960's-esque version of a
filler nonsense word, but completely out of place in this tune. I've never been a
big fan of the "hey woo" or the "woe woe woe woe" (think Love
Somebody) but at least in those songs they seem to fit. In this song it just stops
me from enjoying it.
I guess the other thing I've not cared for is that he sounds like he's begging here, and
that's just a picture of Rick I don't like seeing. LOL. I mean, this is
clearly a totally made up scenario, because we all know Rick would never have to
beg...right? <wink>
Thumbs down for me on New Lover. You might
be able to dance to it, but the repetition of the music and non adventurous language
(minus the word confidante...snaps for that) make it fall under the usually high standard
bar I set for Rick music.
I'll say right now that I don't care for the music in this one at all. It just
annoys the hell outta me, and I very rarely listen to this song as a result.
There are several lines I like, such as:
Baby you need sexual healing
You're damn right
It's not that it's wrong but it sure ain't right
You're just another passion junkie
I don't want to be the confidante
Of your sins
I know I can give you something for your soul
Overall, though, I really don't care for this one. It just doesn't do anything for
me at all.
This song is just one huge
double standard to me. He's calling a girl out because she has many one night
stands. At least he's not calling her "Everybody's Girl." He does
admit that "it's not wrong; but it sure ain't right." I wonder if
he'd be singing this about a guy who sleeps around. - doubt it.
I also see jealousy here. He wants to be her lover, but he doesn't want to be
another notch on her belt. He doesn't want to hear her stories of her conquests
- it "stings" too much. Who likes to hear about their lover's exes?
He says he can give her something for her soul. Who even says she wants
it? While I do believe it is much harder for women to have one-night stands because
we are too passionate, that's not to say that women don't have them and enjoy it
- look at Samantha on "Sex and the City" - perfect example.
I like the phrase "passion junkie" and I like the line
"All your lovers walk on water - for one night." That is so true of
one-night stands (not that I've had any!) - the guy is perfect at the moment you meet
him - and then the morning comes around and he's still there?!
I have a confession. I like the Sha Do Wop. Whew, I feel better getting that one
off my chest. I must admit after the first few listens to this one after
acquiring Sahara Snow I was thinking to myself, "Sha Do Wop??? Have I time-warped
back to the 50's?" But it kind of grew on me.
I like this song for the forcefulness to the words, that it almost gives you an attitude
when you're singing along with it. Because yes, I sing along with all my Rick tunes.
It's a bad habit I seem to have acquired. The second line in... Rick's
already hollerin' "You're damn right" and sometimes when I just need a good
"Unh" ('cause you gotta love them too) I pop this song in.
It took me a while to realize what Rick was singing about in this one. I wasn't
really paying attention to the words with all that snazzy Sha Do Woppin' going on.
Then one day it finally sunk in, and I sort of grinned. Well I'll be damned, I
think I like this woman. It seems to me the attitude I hear is Mr. Springfield
being a little miffed that he's come across a female gigolo. I also like that
Rick thinks that now that she's had him, well there won't be anymore. Such an
ego on this man. :-)
I really love the term "passion junkie". One day I'm gonna thank
Rick for expanding my vocabulary. Unfortunately this was a song that my kids
have heard a few times and misinterpreted the words and then I caught them singing the
wrong words. No, they weren't asking me about the meaning of the song (thankfully
they sing along kind of like stepford children, they have no idea of the meaning of some
of the stuff coming out of their mouths) they were singing - "Everybody knows it does
nothing for your soul, you're just another fashion monkey". So even
though I love the term passion junkie, I just don't get to use it enough.
However, the term fashion monkey somehow gets used repeatedly in our house - and in a six
degrees of Rick Springfield way, I've got Rick to thank for it.
I like this song. I love the catchy beat. He has the
talent to write songs about being on both sides of the story or opposite from one another,
making
positive points about either side. In Scandalous Life, he was the man just in it for the
sex, here he was the man warning his woman about men like that. He wanted to be the one to
commit to love. The woman sees lots of men in her life "bedroom lovers up to the
ceiling day and night" but he wants to be only man in her life "I'm tired of
your show baby don't you understand. I'll be your
new lover". Quite the opposite of Scandalous Life.
I'm not a huge fan of this song, although I like it a
little more now that I've read some reviews and have more of an idea what the song might
be about. And there's some really good moments in the song, for me. I like
"it's not that it's wrong, but it sure ain't right", I like the term
"passion junkie" (kind of slang for sex addict, I would guess).
What you need and what you want are two things....Gee Rick can count!! Shouldn't it
be two "different" things. I always thought that was kind of strange.
My favorite part of the song, the change up in the tune, etc:
Hear you come walking
With another handsome man
I'm tired of your show baby
Don't you understand
Seems to be about a woman who has a history of one night stands and he wants to be more
than that.
Another boy wants
girl, girl maybe isn't right for him/doesn't want him on the same level he wants her. Yet
again the lyrics to the "story" we have heard a time or two in his songs are
beautifully crafted. He's so freakin' good at that!!
Seems like this one is about
kind of a wild and naughty girl. Hmmm, what was my first clue?? :o) He is
trying to get this person to see that this is not a very fulfilling life. He is basically
saying you can live your life how you want, but is that really all she wants out of life?
He is saying give all of those other guys up and just be with me and let me make you happy
and we can build up something meaningful. She may be having fun in the moment, but deep
down inside she is not happy. "Everybody knows it does nothing for your soul."
I have to laugh at the line
"All your lovers walk on water, for one night." Reminds me of the cliche
"Oh god, oh god...." some more, um.... shall we say vocal folks, may use in the
height of the moment. ;o)
I think this is again someone
she knows who is a friend who wants more from her, but she is maybe unaware of his
feelings toward her. They may be close friends that share a lot about their lives with
each other and he doesn't want to hear all about her "conquests". "I don't
want to be the confidante of your sins."
Of course she could be fully aware of his feelings and she just loves to flaunt all of
these other guys in front of him to get a reaction out of him.
