PSYCHOACTIVE
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield, Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce)
Satisfy the flesh
Yeah baby
Oh, huh
Psychoactive
Hey little sister
I don't understand what you did
I'm hot enough to blister
Maybe this is just some kind of foolish game
My mind is playing
One voice it cries a warning
Half of me's already there
And half of me ain't got the stuff
My love, it's out of control
Yeah baby
I tell you because of what she does
To my soul
With all these fantasies she's triggering
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive
The fact is everything's a fantasy
Makes that offer so attractive
'Cause that girl's so psychoactive
Hey little sister
I still sleep alone in my bed
What's wrong with this picture
Could be this is nothing but my fantasy
Am I crazy
One voice says its trouble
Part of me just wants to run
And part of me just wants to fight
Split decision again in my bed
Yeah baby
Another sweet vision
Coming on in my head
Imagination she's triggering
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive
The fact is everything's a fantasy
Makes that offer so attractive
'Cause that girl's so psychoactive
She said she loves you
She said she loves you
She said she loves you
She said she loves you
My love it's out of control
Yeah baby
I tell you because of what she does to my soul
With all these fantasies she's triggering
Psychoactive
Psychoactive
Psychoactive
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive
The fact is everything's a fantasy
Makes that offer so attractive
'Cause that girl's so psychoactive
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive
The fact is everything's a fantasy
Makes that offer so attractive
'Cause that girl's so psychoactive
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive

Boy was I off on my thinking on this one.
Actually I'm starting to worry about myself because I seem to have a difference of opinion
quite frequently, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
This is the song that if I had the option to leave off the CD, I probably would. I
skip it often. Someone else said Rick's voice sounds strained throughout this whole
album, and I agree that it is very apparent on this song. The beginning music
however, sounds like a cross between Duran Duran's "All she wants is" and
"Notorious". Once I get past the Sam Kinison voice (that's what the
beginning reminds me of - which is also so Duran-ish) the music makes me yearn to dig out
some of those Duran CD's.
Ok, enough Duran talk, this IS a Rick song. I had always interpreted the word
psychoactive as someone who was outwardly crazy. Psycho - active....anyone else see
that? The thing with the psychoactive person in this song is that she's so crazy,
she's hypersexual. You know, wanting more sex than the typical woman?
Rick does not see a problem with that, however I'd be a little worried about
meeting up with a sex-crazy woman if I was Rick at any time in his career. Rick
even questions throughout the song that he's not sure if he's crazy or if she is, but he
obviously is going to go along with the ride. (I think there's an intended pun
there.)
I'm really having a hard time figuring out why this one is on the CD. The song
that is known to have come from these sessions, Love Receiver was left off.
Why was this one considered better than that one? If the group was going with a
kicky-dance sounding type of song, they kind of lose it at the end and I find that even at
the beginning it's hard to even keep your toe tapping to it.
This one goes Pfffft! in my book.
I like this song because it is pure
innuendo. I think Psychoactive holds the key to listening to Sahara Snow. It's
just a fun and a REALLY light-hearted-male-oriented lust song. I laugh when I listen
to this song. It's as good as Love Receiver to me. They are both funny. I can
just see these three guys in the studio cracking each other up as they were figuring out
the lyrics and stuff. The funny thing about this song is that he's blaming her for
his attraction (all these fantasies she's triggering)... when it may only be his
horniness. Having worked in Psych. makes the psychoactive funny to me because
it reminds me of LSD, which is a psychoactive substance that makes you hallucinate... I
guess the writer of this song is addicted to women, who are psychoactive to him.
I can't remember who said this: The music is too different from Karma. I think
it was a lot of people. I kind of liked the difference of the two because it means
that we won't ever fall into the ZZ-TOP dilemma of every song sounding the same with
Rick. One of my friends listened to the two CD's and liked Sahara Snow, but hated
Karma. She thought SS sounded more like the old Rick. I like both for
different reasons.
This song would be so much better for me if it
wasn't for the opening line. It just sounds so evil. Maybe if that was Rick's
voice saying "satisfy the flesh" (or is it?), it'd be different. I know for the
longest time the song would start off and I'd just skip it because of the opening.
Kind of reminds me in a way of State of the Heart and that evil voice with the "who's
there?".
So getting past that first line, I really do like this song. I think there is some
really great rhyme scheme going on, and I'm a total sucker for that. I really like
the thought of the girl being like a drug, an addictive drug that triggers
hallucination/fantasies to the point where he doesn't know what's real and what's in his
mind.
I can so identify with the feeling of your "sane" self arguing with your
"insane" self and my insane self is always winning.
The line that stands out for me is :
Hey little sister
I still sleep alone in my bed
What's wrong with this picture? Definitely something wrong with that picture!!!!
Wrong, wrong wrong :-)
When I first started listening to this song I
totally listened to it from the perspective that the song was about the girl kind of
"teasing" him and that he was singing about the craziness of what that was doing
to him. The wanting, not having/getting. You get the picture.
Then I didn't really think too much about the title either. I never really sat down and
tried to "define" what I thought that Psychoactive meant. Enter this little
review group thing. I started really digging into the lyrics and it totally changed what I
thought of the song. Well, one aspect of it. I really get the feeling that the object of
his fantasies has no clue that he is completely lusting over her. There is such wanting
and frustration in this song.
Here's my crazy theory. He's not available, but he's tempted by someone or I should say
tempted to pursue someone that totally triggers something hot and definitely sexual for
him. Sticking with my above thoughts this person probably has no idea about all of his
"feelings" and is not doing anything purposefully to garner those feelings and
thoughts. At this point he has this fantasy "relationship" with this person. He
dreams about her. Has obsessive fantasies about her "My love is out of control."
Then we reach the chorus. This is finally where my brain came up with its theory on what
the word psychoactive means. To me it means this person (as she exists in his fantasies)
really exists only in his head. There is a real person, but he has "created"
this whole other person in his fantasy world. She fires his IMAGINATION. (I take this to
mean the fantasy "relationship".) He feels no guilt in his thoughts about this
person because there really is no physical one-on-one relationship. The fact that
everything's a fantasy, makes that offer so attractive.
Having said that it is NOT that he doesn't THINK about actually acting on his feelings
with this person. Through the whole song he is battling with himself about whether to let
this fantasy person remain just a fantasy or whether to pursue something real as far as a
relationship (definitely physical). I think there are two things to this battle. One, he's
committed to someone else. Two he's not very confident in himself and afraid of this
person rejecting him because he may not trigger the same thoughts in this person
that SHE does in him. He's built up this amazing fantasy and the real thing may not
live up to the intense physical thing he's got going on in his brain.... "Half of
me's already there, half of me ain't got the stuff." "Could be this is nothing
but my fantasy."
It just strikes me more and
more that Sahara Snow is an album of opposites and contrasts. Fitting, with a name like sahara snow. on the surface, it could be just that. Snow in the desert, or it could be the oxymoron.
Psychoactive, everythings a fantasy. Its my opinion that the girl has no clue,
its all in his head. makes that
offer so attractiveis it really an offer?
Has anyone else ever been misunderstoodyoure polite and friendly to a
customer or a stranger in the elevator and suddenly youve got a new best friend or
being, um, offered, um, well, more.
It could just as easily be
turned on Us, the fans. The character of the
song is a person in the audience. Rick is the
girl or person who is triggering all the fantasies. He is just doing his job, but the recepient
doesnt see it that way. makes
that offer so attractive.... but
its just a game.
The other thing that really hits me is the perspective.
Hes admitting that hes out of control and that shes just a
girl. I wonder if this isnt the other
person involved in his beautiful prize. All
the seduction is just in his head but she suffers just the same.

Question ... which one of the three
even came up with the word psychoactive?? I looked up the word in the dictionary
& came up with one entry found for psy·cho·ac·tive Pronunciation:
"sI-kO-'ak-tiv Function: adjective Date: 1961: affecting the mind
or behavior <psychoactive drugs>
LOL, I think that the word found a new popularity after this CD was released.
Along with the word hypersexual.
What a spot, poor Rick is singing about, the girl that is burning a spot in his (clearing
my throat, looking around & whispering) groin area!! I feel like this song is
based largely on a sexual attraction than the traditional deep, long lasting, and mature
relationship that Rick normally covers. The girl's description leaves little to the
imagination because she's young, so wild and everything a horny fellow could want.
It's the age-old dilemma, does he lead himself with his head or his groin area??
This song is another that puts a bounce to my step although it's not one that you'll find
me singing aloud around my house. :)
Satisfy the flesh.. Indeed. :)
I see this song as kind of the opposite
of Scandalous Life, but kind of in the same vein as Rovianne. In this one, she's the
one that is driving him crazy and he has all these fantasies going through his head about
her. She used him and he wanted more, but she didn't give it to him.
>Satisfy the flesh< ---- this could have started out Scandalous
Life. Other than that, the voice and the line doesn't work for me
>Hey little sister, I don't understand what you did< --- she played him
>I'm hot enough to blister< --- I love this line, but not in this context
>Maybe this is just some kind of foolish game, My mind is playing< --- did he
imagine something more going on that what really happened?
>One voice it cries a warning, Half of me's already there, And half of me ain't got the
stuff< --- he's torn, he knows it's no good, but he's already in too deep, but on
the other hand, he doesn't have what it takes to work on getting her.
I like how he uses the half and half again later in the song (part of me just wants to run
and part of me just wants to fight).
>Makes that offer so attractive, 'Cause that girl's so psychoactive< --- I see
this all like she is a very sexy, sexual person and likes to tease.
>Another sweet vision, Coming on in my head, Imagination she's triggering< ---
he's thinking that the whole "Relationship" he thought they had is all in
his head.
>She said she loves you< --- did she really? did she mean it? did
he imagine it?
Overall, I like it and listen to it, but it's not in my list of favorite songs.
I tend to ignore the music on this song, because
I like the lyrics a LOT. The music just doesn't appeal to me. It reminds me of
dance music, and I don't care for stuff like that. The lyrics are so good though
that I can overlook that.
I love the overall theme of the song. This guy is being driven crazy because some
little hottie is just teasing the hell out of him, and probably enjoying all the torment
she's causing him, too.
I see her as someone who is extremely confident of herself and her body and enjoys using
it to her full advantage. Everything is calculated. Every move she makes and
everything she says is laden with sexual innuendo. She leads him on, tells him she
loves him, but always fails to deliver, and he starts wondering if maybe all of it is just
in his head. He doesn't fathom why she would act this way if she has no intention of
following through with all her hinted at promises of pleasure. He's so wrapped up in
her that he keeps coming back for more, hoping that she'll finally stop teasing him and
put him out of his misery, but deep down, he knows that it won't... "the fact is
everything's a fantasy"
He's obsessed with this girl. She's got him so hot and bothered that she's all he can
think about. He knows it's getting out of hand... "my love, it's out of
control" "one voice says it's trouble" and he can see what's
going on. He's torn on what he should do, though..."part of me just wants to
run and part of me just wants to fight". He thinks about it at night, trying to
figure out what to do... "split decision again in my bed". But he's
helpless to do anything about it, because he can't stop thinking about her, fantasizing
about her, and so the vicious circle keeps repeating itself.
Some of my favorite lines in this song are:
I'm hot enough to blister
I still sleep alone in my bed
What's wrong with this picture
Another sweet vision
Coming on in my head
Imagination she's triggering
This set of lines is my #1 favorite...LOVE the way it's worded... very thud-worthy in this
girl's book. ;-)
All in all, I love this song... despite the music.
Satisfy the flesh!! Yeah, baby! I just love this hedonistic,
extremely sexual side of Rick Springfield. No philosophic, spiritual or thought provoking
lyric here, this is purely animalistic.....sex, sex, sex. Although Rick has written
a lot of songs with a sensual theme, most have been about un-requited love or sexual
angst. This one is simply about desire as only a human being as intensely sexual as Rick
can feel.
I have a bit of a different slant in my interpretation of this song. At first I thought it
was just another "relationship" song. And indeed it can be thought of in this
way. Rick frustrated at the emotions he's feeling for the woman he's involved with. But
another way to look at it is Rick fighting "temptation". The very first verse
puts me in this frame of mind "Hey, little sister..." we all now know that Rick
does indeed have a sister-in-law. "I don't understand what you did, I'm hot enough to
blister" YOWZA. "Maybe this is some kinda foolish game" a bit of teasing
and flirting. "My mind is playing" is he reading her correctly or just
imagining it? "One voice it cries a warning" kinda like your conscience, an
angel on one shoulder wagging a finger and the devil on the other shoulder egging you on.
"Half of me's already there and half of me ain't got the stuff" he really wants
to give in, but can't quite bring himself to. The same can be applied to the rest of
the verses, he's still torn, still fighting off the advances of this hypersexual little
chick or maybe it's just in his imagination. But real or not, he still has the same
feelings of desire. It's a real battle and one I'm afraid our hero has lost a few times.
Not that I'm being judgmental, I find it amazing that Rick would even give us a peek into
his tumultuous and tortured mind, on this very personal and highly flammable issue.
He is human, just like the rest of us. And he lets us see him warts and all. He isn't
afraid to explore his dark and demonic side, a part of everyone's personality usually
suppressed for the sake of our own ego and self-esteem. But Rick is secure enough in his
own sexuality and comfortable enough with his fans to "let it all hang out".
Bless his sexually oriented heart.
So you thought he had me with Scandalous Life, didn't you? Well :-(
Psychoactive runs along the lines of Modern World and Rovianne for me. It's another
one where I feel Rick's voice is strained and the lyrics are
battling to keep up with the music. It's so distracting for me that I really cannot
enjoy hearing Rick sing these very sexy lyrics. The only part of the song I don't hear the
struggle in and enjoy, is the chorus:
Psychoactive
That girl is hypersexual
She knows how to fire my imagination
She's got to be psychoactive
The fact is everything's a fantasy
Makes that offer so attractive
'Cause that girl's so psychoactive
This is another statement voicing the sexuality of his feelings.
While Scandalous Life was all about him and what he could do for women, Psychoactive is
about a sexual woman: "that girl is hypersexual" and what she can do for
him, "she knows how to fire my imagination". There are several references
about the woman and his feelings in his mind, "maybe this is just some foolish game
my mind is playing" "with all these fantasies she's triggering"
"could be this is
nothing but a fantasy" But he is enjoying the fantasy. "another sweet
vision coming on in my head, imagination she's triggering"
One of my favorite parts is when he repeats the phrase, psych, psych, psychoactive.
I love that affect.
That being said, I have to say that this is my least favorite song on the CD. The
song just never gels for me. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it.
I decided to take one last look at the words for
Psychoactive and in the foot notes I noticed Talking girl - Bijou Belmar. Talking
girl? I don't remember a talking girl in this song, this required further research.
Pulled out my headphones and popped the CD into the stereo. About half way through,
sure enough there is a girl's voice that says 4 times 'she says she loves you' (if you
listen in stereo it actually starts on your left and ends on the right) then I think the
voice says 'have fun, bye bye'. I'm thinking this has to be the girl taunting him in
his imagination.
Now what to make of these strange voices in the back ground?? This is not the first
occurrence - AOTH has that demon voice which I never understood and they still play in
concert even though I can never hear it playing during the show. I'm starting to
fizzle and can't remember if there are voices in other songs?
Hmm I've posted more questions than interpretations. |
