SCANDALOUS LIFE
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield, Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce)

I've lived a scandalous life
Scandalous life
Yeah, yeah
Scandalous life

I'm the king
Of the city of broken hearts
I'll let you in
But nobody's gotten out alive yet
No saint, no sinner
No saint, no sinner, yeah
No sinner, no saint
But they've all come looking for some satisfaction
Pain and pleasure
Pleasure and pain
No I can't give you what you want
But I can give you what you need baby
I'll be your lover but I'm not your friend
'Cause when your heart it breaks
Won't be 'round long enough to pick it up
Yeah baby

I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
Don't try to change it
And don't mistake it
I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
And in the end I'll be the one to take your heart
And break it

Sure enough
You've got men with more money and grace
I'll make love
'Til the sweat's running down my face, yeah
Pain and pleasure
Pain and pleasure
Pleasure and pain
Yeah you've got it
If you're looking for some action
I'll take you to heaven
Heaven and hell
Though I don't give you what you want
But I can give you what you need baby
Though you just might regret somebody like me
But when your legs are shaking
You'll know I know just how to serve it up
Yeah baby

I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
Don't try to change it
And don't mistake it
I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
And in the end I'll be the one to take your heart
And break it

Scandalous life
Scandalous life

I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
Don't try to change it
And don't mistake it
I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
And in the end I'll be the one to take your heart
And break it

I've lived a scandalous life
I've lived a scandalous life
Don't try to change it
And don't mistake it
I've lived a scandalous life

Wow, this is definitely a different sound than Modern World and Rovianne.

This to me is more Rick than the first two on this CD. This is Rick's voice
not straining to meet a sound that he doesn't have. The guitar is rockin'!!!
I truly love Rick's guitar playing (he's never gotten the credit he deserves for it either!). And the actual flow of the lyrics meets up with the music perfectly.

I don't really have a lot to say about the lyrics themselves except that it's nice to finally get a song from him that his heart hasn't been stomped
on and thrown away.  Makes him very sexy in a very bad-boy kind of way! I do wonder about how much Rick had to do with the lyrics since it's definitely a twist of the subject for him.

My favorite line from this CD (so far) is "I'll make love, 'Til the sweat's running down my face,"  Good God MAN!!!  The visualization on this one, well, okay so sometimes it isn't about the music at all!!!

I think this song is all about the "Soul of a Gigolo".

I think Rick may have wanted to live a Scandalous life but really couldn't.  Sure he may have had the opportunity but it wasn't/isn't in his nature to act on it.  I think these songs are a release for him to let go of any inhibitions.  Either that or he is really good at writing words we all want to hear from him - Sweat's running down my face, legs are shaking, know how to serve it up (OH MY, especially when you look at some concert photos of sweat really running down his face). I'm always pretty slow on the up-take when it comes to getting the hidden meaning in words or songs (yes Big Beautiful Friday Night from Karma had to be explained to me)  but this song just hits me up side the head!!  Nothing left to the imagination here - LOL

I love this song, there is only one song that I like on this CD better and that's....... (I'll wait till it comes up for review).

I like this song especially the hot lyrics. It is another song to let your imagination run wild with :-). And I like the fact the lyrics are so blatant and obvious as to what the song is about so there's no confusion on this one!

It isn't my absolute favorite on the album but I love listening to it and it definitely rocks!

Although it was written in the nineties I always think that for Rick at least it relates more to his life in the late 60s/early 70's. I remember him saying in an interview he had some one night stands in the 70's but they wore thin for him fairly quickly
. So I always associate this song with that period in Rick's life especially lines like 'I'm the king of the city of broken hearts'.

The 'Sure enough you've got men with more money and grace' also suggests the 70's to me since we all know Rick's been very well off from the early 80's onwards. Whenever I listen to Rick's songs I always find myself trying to figure out how it relates to his life and what time period. Of course with the songs on Sahara Snow that are written with others that always complicates it as I also wonder what input they had towards the lyrics. I tend to think Rick wrote the lyrics and they wrote more of the music but that's just my opinion!

My favorite lines are 'I'll make love til the sweats running down my face' and 'But when your legs are shaking you'll know I know just how to serve it up baby'  It's great when Rick talks dirty!
Now here's a song I'd love to hear Rick sing live!

This song is so hard and rough to me--just like I like to hear Rick! lol   It's so full of sexual innuendoes, it is unreal. I'd be guessing Rick had a GREAT DEAL of the input into these words: "pain and pleasure--pleasure and pain"--sooo Rickish-- and I was reading a book on Buddhism and that term was used a lot also.

It's so typical of Rick to write about the male / female differences in a relationship--"no, I can't give you what you want, but I can give you what you need, baby"--he'll be your lover, but not your friend--

Words are just right on in many relationships. And how many of us salivate when just listening to "I'll make love til the sweat's running down my face"--that's our Rick--giving it all he's got in
everything! lol

Of course the part my husband heard me singing
around the house and stopped what he was doing and said "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!"  --the infamous "But when your legs are shakin, you'll
know I know just how to serve it up"  WHOA!

Fantastic song--would love to hear him sing it live.

This is my favorite song from the cd so far. I really like the music on this one, too.  I am under the impression that Rick wrote all the lyrics on all the songs for this cd.   I have no idea where this attitude is coming from.  The attitude of it is so different than the other songs that he writes.  I'm taking it a little tongue in cheek.  He's just so full of himself.  It's a nice attitude change, though.   I wouldn't want all of his songs to be like this, but it's so nice for him to at least pretend to see himself the way others see that he could be.

I love the "sure enough" part.  I don't know why, I just love it. And of course, all those obvious lines that others have mentioned that are truly "thud" on the floor kind of visuals.

However, he clearly hasn't lived a scandalous life.   For there to be scandal, it actually has to be public, you can't live a private scandalous life, because , well, it wouldn't be a scandal if no one knew about it.

I listen to this song and it really makes me smile, mostly because I just don't think he believes a word of it.

This is my favorite Rick song of all time. It gets played over and over and over again when it comes on in my car (Disk 4 - track 14).

This song is pure, unadulterated sex. This is Rick with the goatee (I'm a huge fan of the goatee Rick).  I love his voice here - so carnal!  If he ever played this live, I think I'd just be dumbfounded and my "legs would be shaking."  I'm somewhat of a new fan - 1998 - so when I started listening to his music, I was very surprised to find how sexual his lyrics were.  This wasn't the singer of Jessie's Girl that I thought I knew of.  Then when I got Sahara Snow and heard this and Lust, well, my whole perception of Mr. Springfield totally changed!

I love this verse:
I'm the king
Of the city of broken hearts
I'll let you in
But nobody's gotten out alive yet
Favorite lines:
No I can't give you what you want
But I can give you what you need baby
And of course this one:
I'll make love
'Til the sweat's running down my face, yeah

And I just love how raspy his voice is here, too!! Oh . . .My . . .God!!Oh - the visual .

But when your legs are shaking
You'll know I know just how to serve it up

I like how he makes no promises and just lays it out on the table - "this is what you can expect from this relationship - so don't hold me to anything else.  This is me."

I'll be your lover but I'm not your friend
'Cause when your heart it breaks
Won't be 'round long enough to pick it up
Don't try to change it
And don't mistake it

This part says to me that he's saying, "yeah - you could have richer, more refined men, but they won't please you like I can."

Can you say gigolo?

The song is about someone who lives a "scandalous life" by being a lover not a friend and who "gives you what you need" with no regrets!!!  It's how he wants it, he warns her about it.

This is a great song musically and I love how he takes the word pairs, uses them and reverses them in the song.  No saint no sinner, no sinner no saint, Pain and Pleasure, Pleasure and Pain.

I have just been listening to this song over and over again picturing Rick singing it and after a few too many "legs are shaking" I feel the need for a cold shower!!!

Day dream a bit ... you're gonna love it!

To me, this has always seemed to be either Rick's alter ego, or his description of the life that the public thinks he leads, or maybe, just maybe, his real life (ha!). I prefer to think it's his alter-ego.  But it is the life I always imagined for Rick Springfield, the rock star (not Rick Springfield, hubby and dad).

No saint, no sinner I agree, I like the contrasts here. "No I can't give you what you want
But I can give you what you need baby" -  in pure macho spirit.

"I'll be your lover but I'm not your friend, 'Cause when your heart it breaks, Won't be 'round long enough to pick it up" - at least he's honest.  No strings sex.  Why doesn't this ever work in real life?

"Yeah baby" - he should change this to "no, baby", it fits the context MUCH better.  I sing it really loud with the cd every time, but he hasn't seemed to hear me yet.

"I've lived a scandalous life, I've lived a scandalous life, Don't try to change it, And don't mistake it" - hence, the nasty awful Tom Green goatee.  Typical guy attitude.  (the old adage, she spends the first part of her life trying to find the guy she wants to marry, and the rest of her life trying to change him.)

"Sure enough, You've got men with more money and grace" -  this is where the Rick we are allowed to know shows through.   We know that he's, um, frugal, so money matters, and we know he's not exactly Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire.

"I'll make love 'Til the sweat's running down my face, yeah" - Oh that's an image.

"Though you just might regret somebody like me" -  Um, yup, but it could be worth it.

I've always been fascinated by the "scandalous" aspect of the rock 'n roll life-style that Rick describes so perfectly in this song. One can only imagine the endless string of one-night stands that musicians are famous for. "I'll be your lover but I'm not your friend" ... indicates this. Seeing as our Rock-Gods get so much "practice" in the sexual arena they "know how to serve it up".

Rick, I assume is speaking from personal experience here. He must have been very discreet during these days, since you don't really hear many "scandalous" stories about him.

Once again, as in the previously discussed "Rovianne", the lyrics here are extremely sensual. "they all come looking for some satisfaction"..."I don't give you what you want, but I'll give you what you need"..."won't be
around long enough to pick it up"... "and in the end, I'll be the one to take your heart and break it" ... all exude sex without any commitment, just sex for pleasure. Pleasure on the part of both parties without judgement ... "no saint no sinner, no sinner no saint".  This is another very personal and intimate glimpse into Rick's life - not so "scandalous", if you ask me. At least he was honest with his paramours.

One purely sexual line that makes me tingle is  "Sure enough, you've got men with more money and grace, I'll make love 'til the sweats running down my face" such a considerate lover, wanting to please even though there's no chance for a real relationship. Rick does warn "you just might regret somebody like me". Somehow I doubt it.

The first thing I have to say about Scandalous Life is that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the guitar in it!!!!  That's what I call 'nasty guitar'. You hear it and you just think "YEAH BABY!" 'cause it flat out ROCKS.  I already knew (and was dying over) the lyrics before I ever got the CD, but when I heard that guitar I knew it was going to be my most favorite song of the whole CD. This is one song where it is just impossible for me to sit still when it's playing.

What can I say about the lyrics?  This is probably *THE* most sexual song I have ever heard in my life, and something that I never would have foreseen Rick doing back when I first fell in love with his music.  (But I'm SO glad he did!!!!!)

Picture this, if you will... Rick (WITH the goatee) singing this song, just totally playing up the bad-boy attitude that the song DEMANDS to be sung with.  His voice doing that sexy little growl on the appropriate lines (I'll make love til the sweat's running down my face... yeaaaaaaaaaah)... insert a few little smirks and sly grins.... and we are talking one major thud-worthy moment here!!!!  Seeing how he plays up the bathtub/parlor versions of Gloria, I'm thinking he'd have a LOT of fun with this one!   Mercy...

This is a totally unapologetic, in-your-face "I *will* love you and leave you, so just deal with it" kind of song.  Don't expect him to be there in the morning, cause he'll be long gone by then.

Some of my favorite lines are:

I'm the king of the city
Of broken hearts

No sinner, no saint
But they've all come looking for some satisfaction

No I can't give you what you want
But I can give you what you need baby

I'll be your lover but I'm not your friend

'Cause when your heart it breaks
Won't be 'round long enough to pick it up
Yeah baby
I'll make love
'Til the sweat's running down my face, yeah

Pain and pleasure
Pleasure and pain
Yeah you've got it
If you're looking for some action But when your legs are shaking
You'll know I know just how to serve it up
Yeah baby

Hmmmmmmm.... maybe it would have been easier to say I love EVERY line in the song?   OH!  I have to say I LOVE the guitar solo too!!!!!!!  Give me some more of that nasty guitar, baby... :-D

To illustrate just how *much* I love this song... after I had listened to the whole CD, I played SL (only SL) for days after I got the cd
, listening to it over and over again for hours.  Even when I did start playing the rest of the CD again, I'd listen to this song several times before going on to track # 4.  It's really amazing that I'm not sick of it now.  :-)

Scandalous Life...Ummm yeah!!

Written by the trio again, I wonder how much Rick penned before the other fellows jumped in because this just sounds like Rick's alter ego.  Again the lyrics swell so well together and it speaks to me in emotional and visual ways.

This song is perfection with the accent of how Rick sings it and the melody is wonderful.  Very 80's though, but hey, I loved the 80's.  I'm sure you all can pick out the lines that leave me speechless.  I think I still blush when I'm singing this hot little number.   I can definitely see Rick as this cad of a fellow that loves 'em & leaves 'em.   Just one question, where does one sign up...  he he!!  :)

I saw this as Rick announcing his sexual independence.  He is tired of being the one who is used and then left.  So this time he is going to be the one "I can't give you what you want" -a commitment- "but I can give you what you need".
He is also non-apologetic "Cause when your heart it breaks, won't be round long enough to pick it up"  I loved the sensuality and force of the song, and how this was something he rarely tapped into this rawness.

I also loved the guitar solo at the end!

I like the harmonies in this song.  I like that Rick is showing more of his vocal range, the bass vocals mainly.  It reminds me of Rhythm of the Beat from EFX. I asked him about the background bass vocals in that and he said it was him singing them too. :)

Anyway, lyrically this song kind of shocked me when I first heard it, but I have since come to terms with it and love the song. :)  It's been a long process bringing Rick off the "perfect guy" pedestal . That bright and shining star that was all purity and perfection , now he's still that shining star in my life, he's just not all that pure and perfect. :) lol!

Again the imagery from the lyrics are tantalizing to say the very least... sex, raw sex just for the pleasure of it.  sigh. ;)

My FAVORITE song on this album. I LOVE the growly guitar sound and the funky guitar riffs. The guitar part alone is totally hot, hot, HOT. Throw in the lyrics here.... Well, I've already got the cold shower running on this one... :o)

There are a few lines in this song that if you don't physically feel them, you're not ALIVE for Goodness sake. ;o)~ It's not even just the words, it's the freakin' DELIVERY. Oh MAN! That little semi-growl that he gets going on for some of the lines.

Holy bad boy batman. This is all the little tiny bits of "Naughty Rick" that he has slipped at us here and there over the last few years all rolled up into one 4 minute 17 second shot.

I choose to believe that though this song was co-written, the lyrics are all Rick. They very well could be, but welcome to my little world anyway. LOL!

Kind of a role reversal from his earlier laments on wanting something more than physical... Tables are turned a bit here, wouldn't ya say??  Kind of a bit confident in your "abilities" aren't we Mr. "Love Em and Leave Em"?? Ha!

Stand out lines for me...
"I'll let you in. But nobody's gotten out alive yet."
"I'll make love, till the sweat's running down my face, yeah."   <gulp>
And the Grand Daddy of all wicked, where's my cold shower lines...  "But when your legs are shaking. You'll know I know just how to serve it up. Yeah baby."   <thud - picks self off floor....>

Quite honestly the first couple of times through I didn't even realize what he was singing. I was so caught up in the sound of the song that when I finally realized what the lyrics were, it only increased my love of the song ten-fold. ;o)

Oh, where to begin on this one??  I call this my Sybil song, only because of the range of emotions I experience when listening.  This one should have come with a warning label: Caution, listening can cause a serious loss of mental faculties. I too, am one of those fans that has had Rick up on that "he's a perfect man" pedestal for years - faithful husband, attentive father, handsome as hell rock n' roll god that can also act!  Wonderful package in my opinion.

With that being said, listening to the words in this song has my head yelling, "NO, not Rick!" When he's singing in the 2nd verse, "I'm the king of the city of broken hearts"  and then "No I can't give you what you want but I can give you what you need baby"  My heart really battles with my head, and my good girl-ness finds itself extremely attracted to his bad boy-ness.  In a major way :-O

So then, here's my struggle with good and evil.  Yeah, I'm not stupid - he did/does live in the "celebrity world" that has it's own rules.  I just hate thinking about all those possibilities.

So now that he has come right out and said it, damn him for putting a chink in that armor once more. But see, I have hope that even though his name is first on the words/music credits, that he just basically lent his voice to this song.  Ok, so maybe I'm dreaming, but this is my review!  Further on into my dream I find myself arguing that Rick sure is a hell of a good actor, he's sounding pretty authentic on these lyrics.

This is a jammin'  song, that's for sure - and for whatever part of me that's still living in goody two-shoe land, it pales in comparison to the part of me that just loves to hear him sing, "I'll make love 'til the sweat's running down my face".   The growl that comes out with it  just hits me in the pit of my stomach (yeah, that's it -  the stomach,  'cause I'm not going THERE in this review)  every time.  Dammit.   Sigh..

The guitars - gotta love 'em in this one, they are whining right along with those words.   By the end, when he's talking about your legs shaking...well let's just say that they are and we'll go on our merry way, shall we??  Uh oh, I've just crossed to the dark side.

So I have an extreme love/hate relationship with this song.  I know many have already said you like the words way more than the music on this album.  Well for me on this one, I'm sticking with the music.  Although if forced at gunpoint, I'm admitting that the lyrics on this song are like...DAMN!  Aw shucks, I like the lyrics too.
