SUZANNE
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield, Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce)
When things get hot
Oh my love
When things get hot
I know you like the heat
When things get hot
When things get much too much
When things get hot
So tell me why do you always run from me baby
Like you do
'Cause where there's smoke there's fire
I tell you love will never stay
When you're playing the games you play
Suzanne
I understand maybe you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me
Suzanne
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
When things get hot, Suzanne
When things get hot
Oh my love
When things get hot
Do you keep your cool
When things get hot
Things get too hot to touch
When things get hot
So tell me what are you holding out for now baby
Like you do
I'm walking on that wire
How can I get through
There must be something more that I can do
Suzanne
I understand maybe you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me
Suzanne
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
When things get hot, Suzanne
I see the look in your eyes
I don't know why you fight it
You work so hard to deny, it's crazy
Why do you play it safe
Baby wake up and have some faith
Baby I tell you true
All the love will come back to you
Suzanne
This can't be all there is to this
Suzanne
I'll give so much to you if you don't resist
Suzanne
I understand maybe you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me
Suzanne
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
When things get hot, Suzanne
I understand maybe
you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me
Suzanne
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
When things get hot, Suzanne
I understand maybe you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me
Suzanne
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
When things get hot, Suzanne

MORE FAN REVIEWS
I really liked this song from the first time I
listened to it. I think I forgot to breathe for a moment when I heard Rick sing "I
know you like the heat" *pauses to thud a moment* I was hooked on this song from
there on out.
Rick's voice sounds great, I can't properly describe it, but the way his voice sounds on
lines like "I don't know why you fight it" and "I'll give so much to you if
you don't resist" just grabs me and won't let go.
At the risk of contradicting what I said in my last review, I must admit that no matter
what, when it comes right down to it, I've always been a sucker for a romantic song, and
what could be more romantic than the idea of a man who is wise enough to see that (for
whatever reason) the woman he loves won't admit she loves him as well (maybe she's afraid
to because she's been hurt in the past or something) ... and isn't willing to give up on
her ... wants to prove that he really does love her??? *sigh*
Favorite lines:
'Cause where there's smoke there's fire
I understand maybe you're scared to see
Just what your life really means to me <--- THIS is my absolute favorite line in
the whole song ... it just makes your heart melt...
There must be something more that I can do
I see the look in your eyes
I don't know why you fight it
You work so hard to deny, it's crazy
This can't be all there is to this
Suzanne
I'll give so much to you if you don't resist <----*THUD*
Yet another song I really must listen to more
often..
Again, there seems to be this intensely physical
thing. "When things get hot". He wants more. Wants it to be more than just a
physical thing. (Stop me if you've heard this before...:o) I could go on, but it would
sound like a couple of other reviews I have written. Yet, in reading the lyrics of the
song, he said it in a whole new, well crafted way. The subject may be an old well used
one, but the lyrics are not.

It's not hot
and sexy like Scandalous Life, but this one is the second on this CD that I have
personally found to be listenable (I know, not a word...). I like the sound of
the lyrics and music together although I don't really hear a lot of lyric mastery in this
one. It's repeated a little too much for me.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit if this is about Rick and his wife. He has said that he
had to pursue her before she finally acquiesced to dating him. <<I hope you
all noticed my use of a word that I would have never used in my life if it were not for
Rick Springfield>>
I've tended to skip this song in the past.
I think it has a lot to do with the way Rick's voice sounds, almost like he's
whispering when he's singing and the music is drowning him out.
But now listening to it, really listening to it, this is one hot, romantic song. I
think I'd like it better, though, if it didn't have a specific girl's name attached to it
(unless of course my name was Suzanne, then I'd be thrilled, I'm sure :-)
This is another recurring theme to many of Rick's song. The woman is afraid to feel,
afraid to commit, afraid to open up, and he's begging/pleading with her to let him in.
"when things get hot" a line repeated often, seems to have a sexual implication
to it. Maybe the sex is good, but the emotional size of the relationship is missing.
My favorite line in the whole song is "This can't be all there is to this", not
so much for the lyric, but for the sound of Rick's voice. I love the way he sings
that line.
This is certainly not a favorite of mine, though
I do like to hear him say "oh my love". Other than that, the song, words, or
music just don't appeal to me. The theme seems to be that he is trying to convince a girl
to trust him and she is holding back on getting too involved. Then again, knowing Ricky,
it could be just a song about trying to
convince a female to sleep with the guy (LOL).
I don't like this one either. However my
reasons are purely selfish, it has nothing to do with Rick. I know a person named
Suzanne whom I cannot stand. :-) I'm still waiting for that song with my
name, so until then, I'm holding a grudge.
So, getting impersonal here I gotta agree about all the repetition going on. Too
much. I've always thought that this meant that Rick was tapped for words at that certain
point and figured just repeating the same line over and over "should do
it". Sort of like Stranger in the House from Tao, that's another one
that's got way too much repetition for my taste. This song has a lot of words
similar to Rovianne, talking about "the heat". Must've been some hot
days in the recording studio. Or cold, maybe they were wishing for it to be warmer.
The beat however, has always got my toe tapping. This does sound like a radio ready
song to me. Or one of those you hear playing at the grocery store that you're
singing along with unknowingly out loud, until the lady in aisle 9 gives you a weird look,
because you're by yourself.
There is a favorite part in this song for me, and funnily enough he doesn't say
the name Suzanne once. "I see the look in your eyes, I don't know why you
fight it. You work so hard to deny, it's crazy why do you play it safe, Baby wake up
and have some faith" Rick's tone changes a bit, I don't know the right
"musical term" for what happens here, but the beat of the song changes also with
his tone. I always catch myself singing this part out loud.
So the real question here is, who is Suzanne?
This was a hard song to review. Perhaps
its because its probably my least favorite on the cd. Rick has the ability to write
about or has had every type of relationship with a woman. Whether its like
Scandalous Life where he is the strong one just oozing sex and wants nothing more, or this
one where he is trying to get the girl to take a chance. It seems to be polar
opposites:
Scandalous Life:
I'll Be Your Lover but not your friend
Suzanne:
What will it take to make you stop giving up on love
Scandalous Life:
And in the end, I'll be the one to take your heart and break it
Suzanne:
How can I get through? There must be something more I can do
Scandalous Life:
Cause when your heart it breaks, wont be round long enough to pick it up
Suzanne:
Tell me why do you always run from me
It is just a song of hope, of him telling her to put her trust in him, that he wants a
real relationship.
To me, this song is about two people
moving forward in a relationship, but she is hesitant to take that next step - whatever it
is. This is a more "lovey" than the "sexy" songs on this
CD. I like the way his voice sounds when he moans "Oh my love." He's
saying that part to me, right? Right???
This is another one of the
songs on this album that I am neither wild about nor dislike. I like his voice inflections
on the first couple of lines of the song. Oh BABY. The way he says the line "I know
you like the heat" shoots shivers up my spine. :o)
This seems to be a theme he
has written about in several other songs. Boy wants girl, girl is afraid of getting
hurt/holding back, boy tries to get girl to let him in/let him love her...
The thing is, every time he
writes about it, it is done in a completely fresh and new way. It really doesn't feel like
the subject is getting beat into the ground.
